Performance of cost-effective PET packaging with light protective additives to limit photo-oxidation in UHT milk under refrigerated LED-lighted storage condition

Protection efficiency of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging comprising light protective additives (LPA) was investigated for ultra-high temperature (UHT) 2% milk over 26 weeks in refrigerated LED-lighted retail case storage. For the first time, synergistic efficacy titanium dioxide (TiO2) and carbon black (CB) pigments PET protecting nutrients flavor evaluated this study. Combination TiO2 (6.8 wt%) CB (23 ppm) (S-PET) protected quality as effectively light-proof up to 13 storage, demonstrated by improved riboflavin retention, lower TBARS value, reduced production volatiles associated with off-flavor including aldehydes compounds dimethyl disulfide. Photolysis packaged S-PET limited 7.0% within storage under exposure high intensity LED light. The study that selection appropriate LPA combined provided a cost-effective solution protection milkfat UHT stored conditions weeks.
